Types of Acceptable Donations

Gifts of Cash
Monetary gifts provide maximum flexibility for addressing the care and treatment of the children at Spofford and for necessary operating funds. Cash gifts may also be designated for specific projects or capital needs.

Sponsor Donors
Sponsor donors commit to provide financial support on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Memorial or Honor Gifts
Memorials are discretely acknowledged to the family of the deceased. Honor gifts are made in honor of a friend, work associate, or loved one to celebrate a special occasion, or just to let them know they’re important. Memorial and honor gifts are designated for the long-term care of Spofford children.

Stock Gifts
Your appreciated stock (held for more than one year) is an excellent gift. You receive a charitable tax deduction for the value of the stock at transfer and avoid capital gains tax.

Bequests and Planned Gifts
Spofford’s long history of providing at-risk children with loving, professional care has been possible because of the many individuals who made provisions for Spofford in their will or estate plan.

In 1997, the Spofford Legacy Society was created to recognize individuals who make this lasting commitment to Spofford. It's not necessary to reveal financial details of your plans to be a member. Simply notify the Resource Development department that you’ve made a provision for Spofford in your will.

There are several types of bequests you may want to consider:

  • Cash Bequest: a specific dollar amount
  • Residuary Bequest: a percentage of your estate after specific bequests, debts, taxes, and expenses have been paid
  • Specific Bequest: specific assets such as stock, real estate, or personal property

To add a codicil or provision to your will on behalf of Spofford, simply call your attorney requesting to add a sentence such as, "I give and bequeath to Spofford, a non-profit treatment center for children and families, located in Kansas City, Missouri, the sum of $____ or ____ percentage of my residuary estate or the following described property: ______, to be used for general purposes."

Please e-mail Linda Roser, Vice President of Community Relations and Development, for more information about the Spofford Legacy Society or call 816-508-3498.

In—Kind Donations

Butterfly Wishes, the name of our in-kind donation program, provides for the many children who come to Spofford without adequate clothing, winter coats, or toiletries. Many of our children also come without toys, games, or books.

When you provide goods or services to Spofford free of charge, you help meet the basic needs of our children and help provide a safe, sufficient environment for their care.

Butterfly Wishes specifies needs conveniently organized by particular themes throughout the year. All items are welcomed and needed at any time.

To make an in-kind donation, please e-mail our Resource Development department or call 816-508-3410.

The Spofford Foundations

The Spofford Foundation was established by the Board of Directors in 1996 to oversee and grow an endowment fund to generate a stable stream of income to support Spofford’s programs. Gifts designated for the endowment or the Foundation, as well as bequests, memorials, and honor gifts, are placed with the Foundation and invested to provide growth consistent with fiduciary prudence.

Donor Success

Last Christmas, looking for the perfect gift for their husband and father, the Hunter family was struck by an idea. Having been deeply moved by their experiences with Spofford children, Julee and Kelsey Hunter saw a connection between their family story and the work of Spofford, and they were moved to take action. They set up the "Hunter Family Fund" — an account specifically to provide for unfunded children’s treatment needs. Spofford therapists apply to the fund on behalf of residents; the Hunters replenish it when the monies are spent. A day-to-day special tribute to their husband/father.
